Modern Slavery / Labour Practices
Regulations on modern slavery and labor practices are becoming stricter, with new legislation from both the EU and abroad raising the standards businesses must meet to align with ESG requirements.
Canada’s “Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act”, in effect since January 2024, requires businesses to thoroughly assess their supply chains, identify modern slavery risks, and submit public reports. Looking ahead, the EU’s “Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive” (CSRD), slated for enforcement in 2026, will introduce even more stringent requirements. Companies will need to assess and disclose human rights risks across their entire value chain, including second- and third-tier suppliers.
Businesses need to adhere to these expanding regulations—not only to mitigate legal risks but also to position themselves as leaders in ethical governance and gain a competitive edge in a market increasingly driven by values and sustainability.
